Financial Aid For Students Even At The Last Minute
The summer is over and it is time for collage. But almost every student has to think how to pay for everything – tuition, books, board, room and some other things. How do you cover that gap between financial aid packages and the real cost of things?
Children and their parents have the responsibility to cover part of the costs for collage, because they are using the Free Application for Federal Students Aid. But the thing is that they have to cover the rest of the costs when they apply to the collage of their choice. There is a gap of such costs, called “unmeant need” by experts, which means that the collage can not cover the costs, but the student have to pay for his four years of tuition. And according the calculations in and American collage this gap is around $8,000. Some of the students take care of that problem by getting private loans, which is not really the best decision, but the number of smart students, who find other solutions, is increasing. They are smart, because they are trying other ways to deal with the situation and searching for financial aid during the year. So if you are one of these students that are trapped in such kind of a situation, here are a few advice that might help you getting the financial aid that you need.
1. Scholarships based on merits
There are such scholarships which are offered by the school for students’ merits like academic records of specific talents. It is usually offered once a year, but there is nothing wrong to go into the financial aid office and ask about the situation, because you may be lucky and find a school that is giving and additional scholarship. This could happen if the students awarded with a scholarship have chosen another school, leaving the first one with extra money.
2. Outside scholarships
You can visit some websites and apply for such scholarship. There are such third-party scholarships. They have been awarded by the time when it is the beginning of the school year, but when some have missed the deadlines for applications then the money are distributed for the academic year.
3. Get help from your advisor
You can ask you advisor, it is his/her job to help you find a collage that is suitable for you and also can help you with such information. A lot of universities hold contests which are awarded with pieces. So if you are good at poetry, science, etc, you might try this option for additional financial aid.
4. Tuition assistance for employees
There are companies offering such assistant programs. Students who work full or part time jobs can ask their employers if they qualify for such a program. The companies invest in their employees` tuition and after that the students are usually obliged to work for the company for a certain period in order to pay back this investment in their knowledge and skills.
5. Loans for emergency cases
Such emergency loans are being offered by the collages and that practice exists for several years. All you have to do is apply in the financial aid office of the collage, explain why you need the loan in such a hurry and have to be prepared also to explain how you will pay it back. There is also a possibility to extend the period for paying back the money, but this decision depends on the office that is giving the financial aid.
6. Make an appeal
Students have the opportunity to appeal for outside scholarship award or financial aid package if there is a change in their family status. When you make such an appeal you have to explain what the new situation is and attach some documents as a proof (like unemployment notice or medical documents). The school will review your appeal and will take a decision to give you a loan or a work study job. In such a situation they take into consideration the change in your circumstances, not how well you do at school.
